Blogging for the Faint of Heart

New to blogging? It’s not as hard as you may think.

Of course, the idea of sitting down and writing something the whole world could see may make you break out in a sweat. Don’t be scared! Blogging is easier than you think.

But I’m Not a Good Writer!

No one is born a perfect writer. Thankfully, like many things in life, blogging doesn’t require innate skill; it just requires showing up reliably.

The most important thing about blogging to build your brand is doing so on a regular schedule, whether that’s once a week, once a month, or somewhere in between. Sticking to a predictable schedule helps readers know when they can expect a new post and should return to your website to read it.

Blogs, especially for fun travel-related topics, should be casual in tone and short, between 300 and 600 words. Using bullets and numbered lists is a great way to break up information and make it easy for readers to skim, which is particularly helpful for people viewing your website on a small mobile screen.

Where Do I Even Start?

We’re gonna let you in on a secret: there’s very little completely original content in the world. Everything old is being made new again all the time. (Just think about how many times we’ve seen bell bottoms come in and out of fashion.) Blogging is no different. You can share the same information you give to your guests with your web visitors, and even information other travel vendors are sharing.

You don’t have to start from a totally blank page to provide valuable information to readers. As a property manager who shares your beautiful town with guests every day, you have a unique perspective on what’s great about your area and an arsenal of helpful travel tips. These are all great topics for a blog! You can also check out your direct competitors' blogs and blogs of other establishments that serve tourists, like local tourism boards.

These are just suggestions for places to get inspiration. Directly cutting and pasting another person’s blog onto your site is plagiarism and we strongly advise against it. But, if you see several other people writing about a certain topic and can give it your own unique spin, you’ve got the start of a great blog post.

What Else Should I Know?

  • Adding a relevant image to your blog post is a must. Make sure you own the picture or that it’s free to use, like a Creative Commons image. If you have a video, include that as well. People love informational videos and so do search engines.

  • No one is immune from typos. Even professional writers who write 40 hours a week need someone to read their pieces when they’re done. Why? Because once you’ve stared at something all day, you stop seeing typos and misspellings. Have a trusted friend or colleague review your drafts and make sure to run spell check.

Ready to flex your writing muscles? Start with something easy, like a piece of advice you share with your guests all the time. You know it already, and all you have to do is write it down!

Here are a few more topics:

  • Your guests’ favorite places to go to in town and why. It’s interesting information to vacation enthusiasts looking for places off the beaten path when they travel.

  • Travel tips for people coming to your unique area. Should they be prepared for certain types of weather? Is there anything people always have to go out and buy when they get there?

  • Nearby restaurants that never fail to impress. You can even break this into a few blog posts, one perhaps focusing on breakfast, one on date night locations, or one that can cater to large groups.

  • Family-friendly activities for travelers with young children. Parents will always need another way to keep their children entertained.
